For my readers, if you’re out there, I enjoy reading books in these genres: classic literature (a.k.a. old-timey-stuff-by-dead-people), contemporary fiction (as long as it’s not all about sexual angst), world literature, mysteries, epic literature, Christian theology, Christian living, and some fantasy, philosophy, poesy, history, biographies and etc. I will, hopefully, be reading some books on writing and reading too.
Some authors I have enjoyed (by genre):
Classic literature: Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevskii, Hemingway, Steinbeck, and etc.
Contemporary fiction: Jhumpa Lahiri, Jonathan Rogers, Leif Enger, Marilynne Robinson, and David Foster Wallace. (I need to read more of the contemporary stuff, but I love the oldies).
World literature: Books written by authors not from the United States. Need to read more contemporary authors here.
Mysteries: Mainly Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers. I’m hoping to read some Sir Arthur Conan Doyle soon.
Epic literature: I am currently reading an updated version (by Ashok K. Banker) of the Ramayana. I am enjoying it a lot. I have enjoyed ancient greek literature and am hoping to read Beowulf.
Christian theology: John Piper, Augustine, John Calvin, Tim Keller, D. A. Carson and I’m hoping to read books by Francis Chan, John Frame, and others. I read mainly Christian Reformed theology, and I try to read deep-thinking-deep-feeling stuff (to stretch the legs and heart), but I am open to reading others.
Christian living: Many of the same authors as Christian theology.
Fantasy, philosophy, poesy, and other: C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Pushkin, and others. Open to reading more in these genres.
And if you know of a good book on writing, reading, or literature, please comment here or contact me at j.calvinoconnor(at)gmail.com. My writing needs help. Thanks.
